Experimental Approaches for Controlling Current Flowing through Metal-Molecule-Metal Junctions

چکیده
Electron-transfer processes through molecular systems have attracted much attention over the past fifty years. The traditional experimental approach for studying these processes is based on measuring the electron-transfer rate in D–B– A supramolecular systems between electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) units that are covalently linked through a molecular bridge (B). In the late 1990s, a combination of nanotechnology, scanning probe microscopy, and methods to form functional connections to metal surfaces, triggered the fabrication of different kinds of metal–molecule(s)–metal junctions and opened the door to a new experimental approach to measure electron-transfer processes through molecules as current flowing between two electrodes. By using a combination of sophisticated and expensive techniques, difR ES EA R C H N EW S

Identifying diversity in nanoscale electrical break junctions.
The realization of molecular-scale electronic devices will require the development of novel strategies for controlling electrical properties of metal/molecule/metal junctions, down to the single molecule level. Here, we show that it is possible to exert chemical control over the formation of metal/molecule...molecule/metal junctions in which the molecules interact by pi-stacking. The tip of an ...

We have assembled two junctions that incorporate redox sites between Hg electrodes by different interactions. In the first junction, Hg-SAM-R//R-SAM-Hg, the redox site (R) are covalently linked to each electrode in self assembled monolayers (SAM-R). In the second junction, Hg-SAM//R//SAM-Hg, the redox sites dissolved in solution are trapped by electrostatic interaction at the SAM formed at the ...

A combined experimental and theoretical study is presented revealing the influence of metal-molecule coupling on electronic transport through single-molecule junctions. Transport experiments through tolane molecules attached to gold electrodes via thiol, nitro, and cyano anchoring groups are performed. By fitting the experimental current-voltage characteristics to a single-level tunneling model...

We calculate the electrical currents through a superconductor-insulator-superconductor junction which is also weakly coupled to a normal-metal side probe. The voltage V applied to the normal-metal terminal controls the occupation of Andreev energy levels En , and therefore controls the Josephson current flowing through these levels. Whenever the probe voltage crosses an Andreev level, the Josep...

We consider several fundamental optical phenomena involving single molecules in biased metal-molecule-metal junctions. The molecule is represented by its highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, and the analysis involves the simultaneous consideration of three coupled fluxes: the electronic current through the molecule, energy flow between the molecule and electron-hole excita...
